Q: What is the thing that you struggled with the most?

A: One is the long shooting period. From November 2018 to June 2019. The other is to shooting with different concepts at the same time. RK2&3 was a continuous story of the same age, but this time I was writing RK4 script while shooting RK5. It’s sometimes confusing to film the Meiji Era while writing the story of the Bakumatsu Era at the same time. I didn’t have enough time to sleep or shoot, but I didn’t make the wrong choice barely.

Q: Did you cast as you wanted? Did you saw Fandom’s requests on SNS?

A: Realistically, there are also schedule and commercial aspects. but, almost as requested. Many of Fandom’s requests are thought to be judged only by appearance. But actually, acting and age are also considered. For example, in the first movie, casting Yu Aoi to Megumi Takani was criticized as a miscasting. If you judge by appearance only, you will become a dignified actress like Yoko Maki. However, criticism disappeared after the release. It’s selected based on realistic circumstances and human charm.

【Talk about Rurouni Kenshin by Otomo】

・Kenshin’s Scar

We considered the course of kenshin’s wounds. We examined the progress of the scar condition from the time when the scab was made to years after.

・Kenshin’s Hair.

I wondered how red the red hair is. “Does it look red when exposed to sunlight?” We tried many patterns. Tried to put a red wig on Takeru…“ughh! this is just like a cosplay!”

・Kenshin’s Kimono

we tried various patterns, Obi, Hem, sleeve length…and sunny day, cloudy day. Short things are prepared so as not to get in the way when taking battle scene. Kenshin’s Kimono has made 8 outfits. 4 for Takeru Satoh, 4 for stunt double. In addition, for the wire-fu, battledamage ver…a total of 20 patterns x 8 pieces are made. Costume staff will perform aging processing. Rubbing with pumice stones or applying blood paste to wash off repeatedly. The set and actor are the same. 2nd and 3rd day are better than 1st day.

・Battle Scenes

Battle scenes cannot be taken in 2-3 days. Shoot for at least 5 days while adjusting the schedule. The directors benefit from the staff doing a good job and the actors acting comfortably.

・Big Budget

An unprecedented big budget for Japanese films. It’s a must-see!!

・Initially…

When I received an offer from Warner Bros for “Rurouni Kenshin” Live-Action and read the original, I thought “It doesn’t have to be me”. However, it was a good opportunity to try out the action scenes ideas that I had when I was in LA, and I had a lot of materials from the Bakumatsu Era that I collected at the time of “RYOMA-DEN”.

・Tsuioku and Jinchu

I think that Bakumatsu and Meiji Era were two sides of the same card.

・Think out of the box

There are original fans among the staff, but they tend to impose their own “Ruro-Ken”. “Kenshin(or Saito) don’t say like this!” and so on. Since they are original fans, I ask them for their opinions, but sometimes they are wrong.

・Trust

Takeru Satoh is also a fan of the original, so he understand Kenshin more than anyone else. (Yeah...).
