References to icons are very common in pop culture. It is not a recent custom, but it can be said to be one of the pillars of cultural manifestation.

And the anime/comics/movies industry always presents fans with easter eggs whether it's more clearly or discovered when revisiting the media.

Rurouni Kenshin does'nt stand on ceremony and embraces it. You can see from one of the Ninja Turtles going to hug Kenshin after he defeats the police swordsmen (in the second chapter of the manga) to the design inspiration in various characters such as Jin-e black eyes and the master Hiko's cape.

It can be said that the reciprocal is true. Rurouni Kenshin is referenced in some other works like Gintama, Dragon Ball Super and even Asobi Asobase. A new anime that has drawn attention for its engaging story and charismatic characters is Kimetsu no Yaiba, based on the eponymous manga by author Koyoharu Gotōge with animation from the Ufotable studio.

"Japan, Taishou Age. Tanjiro, a kindly young man who makes a living selling coal, finds that his family was massacred by a demon. And to make matters worse, his younger sister and only surviving, Nezuko was also transformed into a demon. In this dark reality, Tanjiro decides to become a demon slayer to make his sister become human again, and to kill the demon that killed his family. A sad tale about two sinblings, where the destinies of humans and demons intertwine, begins now."

Something that appears to be a reference to Rurouni Kenshin happens in episode 9. Tanjiro uses a technique very similar to Saitou's Gatotsu.

However, Saitou's technique is based on Vice Commander Hijikata Toshizou's Hirazuki, which is a real technique. Still, the angles the animators used for composing the moment the technique is performed is, to say the least, suspicious. And out of curiosity, in the manga Rurouni Kenshin Tokuitsuban, in the fight between Saitou and Kuroko (Gein younger version using alternative design of Kanzenban), Saitou uses hirazuki in its original form - with the right arm.

After all, there was still doubt that it would be wanting to see something that does not exist. But in episode 14, there is a scene that corroborates this line of reasoning. When Zenitsu first sees Nezuko, he thinks she and Tanjiro had a romantic relationship without even letting his new friend explain anything. And in the midst of this crisis of envy, Zenitsu says that Tanjiro should be "purged immediately" from the Demon Slayer Corps. In addition to his repeating twice, he sounds away to similar to "Aku Soku Zan" (the evil immediately eliminated), he even wields his katana similar to Saitou when he meets Kenshin at the Kamiya dojo. Detail, this specific part is not in the manga. Check out the scene:

So, what do you think, it is all a big coincidence or indeed the animators of the Ufotable studio wanted to make these references?
